Avoid a head injury this winter! The most common winter head injuries come from slipping on icy surfaces. Avoid a head injury by staying off ladders in icy weather, and investing in boots with traction. Walk carefully and be sure to salt your walkways. When hanging and taking down holiday lights, be sure to have a spotter and a trustworthy ladder.

If you’re climbing on ladders to investigate a leaking roof or an ice dam, contact a roofing professional

When the weather warms up there are more police reports of roofing scams. Use these 10 tips to avoid being scammed!

  • Never agree to unsolicited services – No good roofing contractor goes door-to door.
  • Always check for a license – Never hire an unlicensed contractor.
  • Always get a written contract – Always get a written contract, and read through it several times.
  • Get documentation of credentials – Be wary of a contractor with no business cards, bid forms, contracts, etc.
  • Verify the contractor – Verify a contractor’s license here: Maryland, Virginia, Washington, DC
  • Verify their claims – If the scammer says he did work for the neighbor, ask to speak to the neighbor
  • Watch out for scammers who take advantage of storm damage – Never hire a contractor who goes door-to-door after a storm. That’s prime time for scammers.
  • Get everything in writing – Don’t rely on spoken promises.
  • Beware of “deals” – Everyone loves to save money, but not at the cost of a poor repair job.
  • The contractor says they have “extra materials” – good contractors shouldn’t have extra materials. They should plan accordingly and keep an inventory of supplies and leftovers.

When a window or siding has a leak, it damages the parts you don’t see first. That means you could have water damage in your walls or even your foundation. The best thing to do is to get new windows when your old ones show signs of aging, or if they’re made of cheap materials.

  • Curling or missing roofing shingles

  • Water spots in your walls
  • Signs of mold on your roof, in your attic, or on your ceilings
  • Damaged flashing

March 2016:

If you’re decluttering this spring, create an inventory as you move through your home. That way, you know exactly what (and how much) you have, so you may feel better about throwing out that slightly-broken cat crate.

When you’re done with your inventory, you can divide your belongings into three categories: the Must-Haves, the Wants, and the Dumpster.

  • Do it now and upgrade to insulated siding for energy savings year round
  • Do it now and forget about painting in the spring

The worst thing about roofs is that many of us don’t know we have a problem until the signs leak through the ceiling. Since it’s an El Niño year, our winter will be a long, wet one. If your roof has any weak spots, you’re going to notice some damage, which can be:

  • Mold
  • Weakened structure
  • Rotting structure
  • Ruined carpets
  • Ruined drywall
  • Ruined insulation
  • Lost heat/higher heating bill
  • Noticeable sagging

November 2015

Cracks, old materials, and warped wood can all contribute to heat leaking out through your windows. Tape and sealant can provide quick fixes, but you’d be better off getting energy-efficient windows to help lower energy costs. If you can’t decide between wood and vinyl, opt for Andersen Windows. They offer vinyl-clad wood windows that are the best of both worlds.

September 2015

It’s an El Niño year, and for the East Coast that means a wet winter. Get an inspection this fall before the weather takes a toll on your roof. To be the most prepared for the next six months:

  • Make sure your roof isn’t sagging in any places, which leaves a reservoir for rain to collect.
  • Check the insulation in your attic to be sure you have enough to prevent ice dams.
  • Take a close look at your shingles. If you’re missing any or see cracking or curling, contact us for repairs!

August 2015

A Dumpster isn’t just for businesses! Roll-off dumpsters are great tools for cleaning out clutter and broken summer toys. The kids are back in school, which makes now the perfect time of year to clean out the closets and get rid of all the used art supplies, and games that may not have made it through the summer intact. Rent your Shanco Dumpster today!

July 2015

Aside from a gaping hole in your roof, do you know common signs it displays when it needs repairs? Generally, if you see any of the following, you should give us a call right away!

  • Missing shingles: High winds, debris from falling trees, and animals can tear off or knock loose your shingles. Use binoculars to have a look at yours. If you see any missing shingles, you need to get them replaced.
  • Cracked or peeling shingles: shingles that are cracked or peeling can let water leak in and are close to the end of their lifetime.
  • Stains or water marks on your ceilings. Even if you don’t see a puddle, stains on your ceiling likely means there’s a leak. You need to find the source and repair it before the problem gets bigger.
  • Discolored shingles, mold or algae. These elements are common in warm, wet climates and can cause your shingles to fail.
  • Old age. If your asphalt-shingle roof is more than 10-15 years old, it’s time for a replacement.

May 2015

Gutter guards can prevent leaves, animal nests, pine needles, twigs, sticks, and more from clogging up your gutters and causing problems such as:
Roofing damage

  • Basement leaks or flooding

  • Flower bed erosion and other landscaping problems

It’s definitely time for a replacement!
