If you’re climbing on ladders to investigate a leaking roof or an ice dam, contact a roofing professional

When the weather warms up there are more police reports of roofing scams. Use these 10 tips to avoid being scammed!

  • Never agree to unsolicited services – No good roofing contractor goes door-to door.
  • Always check for a license – Never hire an unlicensed contractor.
  • Always get a written contract – Always get a written contract, and read through it several times.
  • Get documentation of credentials – Be wary of a contractor with no business cards, bid forms, contracts, etc.
  • Verify the contractor – Verify a contractor’s license here: Maryland, Virginia, Washington, DC
  • Verify their claims – If the scammer says he did work for the neighbor, ask to speak to the neighbor
  • Watch out for scammers who take advantage of storm damage – Never hire a contractor who goes door-to-door after a storm. That’s prime time for scammers.
  • Get everything in writing – Don’t rely on spoken promises.
  • Beware of “deals” – Everyone loves to save money, but not at the cost of a poor repair job.
  • The contractor says they have “extra materials” – good contractors shouldn’t have extra materials. They should plan accordingly and keep an inventory of supplies and leftovers.

Aside from a gaping hole in your roof, do you know common signs it displays when it needs repairs? Generally, if you see any of the following, you should give us a call right away!

  • Missing shingles: High winds, debris from falling trees, and animals can tear off or knock loose your shingles. Use binoculars to have a look at yours. If you see any missing shingles, you need to get them replaced.
  • Cracked or peeling shingles: shingles that are cracked or peeling can let water leak in and are close to the end of their lifetime.
  • Stains or water marks on your ceilings. Even if you don’t see a puddle, stains on your ceiling likely means there’s a leak. You need to find the source and repair it before the problem gets bigger.
  • Discolored shingles, mold or algae. These elements are common in warm, wet climates and can cause your shingles to fail.
  • Old age. If your asphalt-shingle roof is more than 10-15 years old, it’s time for a replacement.
