What Are My Options When it Comes to New Roofing?

You have plenty of options! There are a number of different roofing materials and varieties, such as cupolas or dormers. Shanco Companies is one of the best roofing companies in Maryland – we have installed roofing for homeowners throughout the Washington, DC Metropolitan area for more than 20 years.

Our new roof installation services include:

  • Copper roofing
  • Standing seam metal roofing
  • Slate (and simulated slate) roofing
  • Cedar shake roofing
  • Asphalt shingle roofing

We can also install roof cupolas.

New Roofing: Copper

Copper roofing can add a unique touch to any home – and it doesn’t require a lot of maintenance to keep your new roof looking great! With minimal upkeep, copper roofing can last for 50 years or more. Over time the copper oxidizes and turns a shade of bluish green, developing a nice patina finish, but this doesn’t mean you’ll need to replace your roof in the near future. In fact, the patina finish actually protects your roof from corrosion!

Copper roofing can also help improve your home’s energy efficiency. It reflects, rather than absorbs, heat from the sun, which helps keep your home cooler and keeps your AC from having to work as hard.

New Roofing: Standing Seam Metal

You know metal is one of the most durable materials available, and standing seam metal roofing is one of the most popular options for new roofing. Standing seam is a type of metal roofing with continuous panels that run from ridge to eave. Fasteners (which are raised above the roofing) connect the panels.

It’s not hard to see why standing seam metal roofing is so appealing to homeowners. Like copper roofing, standing seam metal roofing can last for more than 50 years – it is one of the most long-lasting types of Prime Roofing choices on the market.

New Roofing: Slate

Like metal roofing, slate roofing can last an extremely long time with minimal maintenance. But that isn’t the only reason you should consider slate when you’re deciding which material to use for your new roofing! Slate roofing is:

  • Eco-friendly (it doesn’t require any chemicals to be maintained)
  • Resistant to rotting, insect damage, fire, severe weather damage, etc.
  • Available in a wide variety of different colors

Simulated slate roofing, which Shanco can also install for you, is a good option if you like the beautiful look of slate but have budgetary restrictions.

New Roofing: Cedar Shake

While cedar shake roofing doesn’t offer waterproofing abilities and low-maintenance characteristics, it is appealing in a number of different ways. Not only do cedar shake roofs offer a unique appearance, they also:

  • Offer energy savings – cedar is a natural insulator and keeps your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer
  • Are environmentally friendly – cedar is recyclable and renewable

Note: Never use sealant on your cedar shake roof – this will capture the moisture that would otherwise evaporate. Instead, use a water repellant product, but it’s better to ask your roof installation company before using any product. Also, cedar shakes need to breathe, so be sure to keep your roof clear of debris like leaves, sticks, etc.

New Roofing: Asphalt Shingles

There’s a good chance you’ve seen asphalt shingle roofing on someone’s home – it’s one of the most common types of roofing. Asphalt shingle roofing is economical, fairly easy to repair if you know what you’re doing and complements all types of homes – old, new, contemporary, rancher style cottages, anything!
