There are many things that can go wrong when it comes to your roof, and a lot of the time, it starts with proper maintenance! Keeping up with your roofing (and gutter) maintenance is an easy way to make sure your roof lasts as long as possible and stays in good condition.
Common roof problems include:
Clogged gutters: your gutters can get clogged with leaves and other debris or by ice and snow buildup. A lack of maintenance can certainly aggravate the problem, so make sure you take care of your gutters. After all, they help protect your home against water damage. If you are unable to or don’t want to clean out your gutters yourself, hire professionals who can! Gutter clogs are one of the most common roof problems – but also one of the most avoidable!
Damaged or missing shingles: Roof shingles can blister, curl, or fall off your roof completely. If your shingles are loose, curling, or blistering, it could indicate moisture problems and poor ventilation. But do NOTgo up on your roof to inspect it – there is an increased risk of doing more damage as well as getting injured!
Roof vent damage and improper ventilation: roof vents are typically damaged by hail or small animals like raccoons. If a vent is smashed or otherwise ruined, it cuts off air flow to and from the attic, which can trap excessive heat and significantly increase your energy bills.
Algae or moss growth: The parts of your roof that are shady and stay damp after it rains, like those under your satellite dish and chimney, are more likely to develop moss and algae. To help prevent this, it may be a good idea to cut any overhanging branches that block direct sunlight.
Faulty installation: improperly installed roofs are more likely to leak and experience problems like poor ventilation, shingle damage, granule loss, etc. If your roof is starting to fail for seemingly no reason a few years after installation, it probably needs to be replaced.
Moisture problems: From leaks to rotting to water spots to mold and mildew growth, there are a number of moisture problems that indicate it may be time for roof replacement. These types of roof problems can’t be overlooked – they need to be fixed right away because they can cause damage to the rest of your home.
Tree damage: Branches can abrade your roof’s surface and damage its protective top layer. If removing overhanging branches isn’t an option, call professional roofers like Shanco to help!
